Introduction

NepomukSimple allows users to organize, annotate, search and browse desktop resources. It is based on the Pile concept, meaning you can manage groups of resources (not only files, but also address book entries, calendar entries, concepts and web links).

How to run

Go to the "Window->Perspectives" menu. Select "NepomukSimple". For interoperability with Thunderbird and Firefox, plugins should be installed. See "Easy piling" below.

Basic layout

The following image shows the basic layout.

A. User collects resources here. A collection is called a ”pile”.
B. Properties of resources in the pile appear here.
C. Specialized views of certain properties here. (eg. timeline, map, recommendations, search results)

Basic interaction

Creating a new pile

You always get a default (empty) pile when you open NepomukSimple. To create another pile, either use the "New pile" option in the "Pile" menu or drag a resource to an empty place in the top panel.
drop resources here to create new pile
Top panel. Drop resource to the right of existing pile tab(s).
This will create a new pile containing only that resource.

Adding resources to a pile

Add files to a pile by dragging them from a file explorer into the A area. When related resources show up in the B area, or when search results show in the C area, that should belong to a pile, drag them to the A area.

Annotate resource

Select one or several resources in the A area. Enter an annotation in the input box at the bottom of the B area. Then press the Add button. tagging in NepomukSimple

This will add an annotation about CID. (Actually a relation of type "hasTag" with value "Germany".)

Edit property

Click on the line of the property you want to edit (click on empty space - not on actual text). The line turns blue:

Click the edit button (pen icon). The predicate type and object value become editable fields.

Edit contents of (eg.) the predicate type. A drop-down menu will scroll to items in loaded ontologies that match your input. Selecting a value from an ontology will make your knowledge model more semantically connected than entering a free-text value. Click the Save button (diskette icon).

Here, we specified that Germany is actually connected to CID via the Country relationship (from Nepomuk Contact ontology, called Person).

Recommendatons

The Recommendations view tells you what other items from the local store seem to fit for this pile. Recommendation is based on IBM Galaxy. A rating is provided for each recommendation.

View pile data in map view

Select the Google Map tab in the C area. Any geographic position annotations to resources in your current pile will be displayed in the map view. The map can be panned and zoomed just as on the Google Maps website.

View pile data in timeline view

Select the Timeline tab in the C area. Any chronological properties of resources in your current pile will be displayed in the timeline view. The timeline can be panned (by dragging) and zoomed (by clicking on magnifying glass icons).

Use the freetext input field in the bottom of the A area for searching. Search results show up in the C area. Found resources can be dragged to a new or existing pile.

Easy piling from Thunderbird and Firefox

When you view an item (mail, webpage) in Thunderbird or Firefox, you can easily file it into one of the piles by chosing the pile name in the status bar and pressing the blue diamond (hybercube) button near the pile chooser. Some of the piles may be specially recommended by IBM Galaxy based on their text content. You can download the Firefox plugin or the Thunderbird plugin. Install them via Tools/Add-ons.
